• Jefferson Circuit Court - General Information

  • Jefferson Circuit Court hears cases involving remedies of more than $4,000 and/or one or more years of incarceration.  Cases come before Circuit Court by way of the Grand Jury - a group of private citizens called to Grand Jury duty for one month. The Grand Jury hears evidence presented by the Prosecution and Defense Counsels.  If the evidence presented warrants court action the Grand Jury votes to issue Indictments - formal charges of wrong doing.  All Circuit Court cases fall under one of two broad catagories:  Civil and Criminal.  Cases are assigned to 13 different Divisions of Circuit Court by random drawing, thereby evenly distributing the total case load among the Judges.

  • All Circuit Court Divisions convene on one of four floors (floors 6 - 9) of the Jefferson Judicial Center, 700 West Jefferson Street, Louisville, Kentucky   40202-4730.  General court information can be obtained by phone from the Jefferson Circuit Court Clerk Public Affairs Office (502) 595-3054.  The Circuit Civil ("Suit Desk") phone number is (502) 595-3007, the Circuit Criminal desk is (502) 595-3009.
